A global webinar organised by the ICAI Singapore Chapter has highlighted the enormous investment potential of Foreign Currency Non-Resident (FCNR) deposits, with organisers estimating that the initiative could help facilitate investment commitments of more than US$2 billion into India.

Held in association with the International Affairs Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) and all 25 overseas ICAI chapters, the first-of-its-kind global webinar attracted nearly 1,800 participants from around the world.

The audience included Chartered Accountants, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), accredited investors, business leaders, family offices and finance professionals keen to understand the recently announced FCNR opportunity.

The webinar featured senior representatives from HDFC Bank, HSBC and the State Bank of India, who provided participants with detailed insights into the FCNR framework, investment procedures, regulatory requirements, taxation aspects and the benefits available to overseas Indians.

The interactive session also addressed numerous questions from participants, giving prospective investors greater clarity on the practical aspects of investing under the scheme.

A key message throughout the webinar was that the current FCNR initiative presents a rare opportunity for the global Indian diaspora to participate directly in India’s growth story while benefiting from an attractive investment avenue.

Speakers explained that higher FCNR inflows could strengthen India’s foreign exchange reserves, improve macroeconomic stability and reinforce investor confidence in the country’s long-term economic prospects.

Industry experts participating in the session estimated that the initiative has the potential to mobilise between US$70 billion and US$80 billion in foreign currency inflows into India, making it one of the most significant NRI investment opportunities in recent years. Such investments, they noted, would significantly strengthen India’s external financial position while allowing overseas Indians to contribute meaningfully to the country’s development.

Speaking during the webinar, ICAI Singapore Chapter Chairperson Sanjay Gattani said the quality of participation was particularly encouraging, with a large number of accredited investors, entrepreneurs, business owners and senior finance professionals joining from across the globe.

He said that, based on the investment capacity of the participants and the leverage available through the FCNR instrument, the webinar alone had the potential to facilitate investment commitments exceeding US$2 billion into India.

Describing the response as a strong vote of confidence in India’s economic future, Gattani said the event demonstrated how well-curated knowledge platforms could play a significant role in mobilising meaningful capital from the global Indian community.

The successful webinar also marked another milestone for the ICAI Singapore Chapter, reinforcing its growing leadership role in bringing together policymakers, financial institutions, global professionals and investors to discuss initiatives of national importance.

As India advances towards its long-term development goals, the organisers said professional institutions such as ICAI can play an increasingly important role in connecting the Indian diaspora with strategic investment opportunities.

The overwhelming participation and enthusiastic response to the webinar underscored the confidence that overseas Indians continue to place in India’s economic trajectory and highlighted the Chartered Accountant fraternity’s growing contribution to nation-building through knowledge-sharing and investment facilitation.
